The Kennel Club Calendar and Stud Book for 1874 Lists 12 shows for the year. There are 44 Bulldog pedigrees listed in the Stud Book. Very confusingly 4 of them are called 'Cribb' as well as there being 2x 'Punch', 2x 'Daisy' and 2x 'Nell' with the only way to distinguish between them the Stud book number.

In 1924 there are a total of 1351 Bulldogs registered and 24 sets of CC available. (a considerably higher ratio of CC/registration than we have today!)

87 Bulldogs were added to the Stud Book . Of these , 33 did not mention the coat colour but of the remaining 54 that did 37 of them were Brindle! How fashions change

Bulldogs of the 20th Century

Currently upto 1920

By the turn of the century the dog more closely resembled the dog of today, although lighter boned the shape was defined. Over the next century the bulldog waxed and wained in popularity through 2 World Wars and several media attemps to discredit the breed. But it survived.

Books were appearing about the breed that went into great detail about the best way to look after, breed, house and exhibit the bulldog and fanciers were starting up more and more Breed Clubs across the UK, specifically London, Birmingham and Sheffield

IN 1993 THE BULLDOG BREED COUNCIL WAS ESTABLISHED

A number of Bulldog clubs decided to form a Breed Council in the 1970's but after a period of a few years it was unable to continue and was disbanded. In 1992 the Kennel Club was actively encouraging clubs to form Breed Councils so in 1993 with most of the clubs participating, the Bulldog Breed Council as it is known today was formed.

The Breed Council is currently comprised of 16 Bulldog Clubs registered with the Kennel Club. The Objectives of the Breed Council is to promote the Bulldog of the true type and liaise with the Kennel Club on all aspects of the health and well being of the breed. The council meets 3 times a year, usually April, August and December
